When many people think of news, they think of the 6:30 p.m.
nightly newscast on their local television station or the New York Times daily
newspaper for sale across the country. However, news is not limited to these
two mediums, nor do these two mediums contain every ounce of news occurring in
the world in a given day. News is simply what happens in the world, whether it
is local, national or international. What is news to someone may not matter at
all to another person, but that does not make it any less newsworthy.
On a related note, journalism is the presentation of news to
the public through various forms of media. Good journalism is a truthful
account of what happens in the world and how people react to it. The field of
professional journalism exists so that an accurate, unbiased account of as much
news as possible can be presented to anyone and everyone who wants to know what
is happening in society.
