News is something that affects your life, or something evokes strong emotion. For example, a new Congressional law can be something that the public needs to know about, like stricter environmental regulations or tax increases. However, more often than not, news is something that can draw people together via emotional ties. While a fatal car accident may not directly affect the majority of a population, a community can be drawn together over a common tragedy. Likewise, stories that convey joy can also serve to bring together whole cities. News is something that can bring people together, or drive them apart.
Journalism is how news is brought to the people. It acts as the in-between for those in power and those who are interested in the current affairs. It also serves to show multiple views to a story.
However, journalism is much more than the way news is conveyed. Journalism also has a certain responsibility to not merely be a voice for those in power, but must question everything that is presented. There must be investigation done in every story to make sure that the ideas conveyed are truly the current affairs.
A Pittsburgher, Meg’s dream is to work for NPR. However, for now she settles for making sure no one drowns in the local pool, singing and reading.
