News is a result of the
human need to be informed. Humans have always tried to understand the world
around them, and news is a manifestation of that need and desire. To me, news is
information that is relevant. It is a collection of facts, figures, predictions
etc. that will give me an advantage in life; that will allow me to understand
my society and humankind and how it is changing; and that will warn me of
struggles or obstacles I might face and teach me how to prepare for them. Thus,
the news is very subjective and it’s definition difficult to truly articulate.
Same is true for a definition of good journalism. It is not
as easy to define good journalism as it is to define say, a good car: Fuel
efficient, good mileage, safety, etc. The reason that good journalism can’t be
defined like that is because journalism is an amalgam of raw information and
the journalist that researches, processes and delivers that information. When a
skilled and knowledgeable journalist finds information that is relevant and
substantial; then develops it into a story to present it in a cohesive,
coherent and unbiased manner, we have an example of good journalism.
